A quick scan of the yellow pages can give you an idea of lawyers in your area. You generally want to find a lawyer who practices in the jurisdiction in which the case will be tried. For example, if you are injured Los Angeles, it is a good idea to find a local L.A. lawyer. You’ll want to shop around for a while, and not just choose the first lawyer you find in the phone book. Many lawyers will offer free consultations, and if they think your case has merit, they will take it on. The lawyer will usually collect a fee based on what the outcome of the lawsuit is.
You should also check out lawyer referral services in your area. You want to find a lawyer who: a) has a history of successful cases, b) is someone you trust, and c) collects money only if you collect.
